choose your place take your stand. to. make your statement. spread the word of the folks you points through the lens of. the for. the for for. the . i did thursday which means that it's time to talk some tech first to report on the music industry's global anti-piracy strategy was leaked and put up on torrent freak let's just say that it tells a thing or two about the mega upload case then something good actually came out of washington d.c. the police chief reminded officers that they actually have to respect citizens
10:31 pm
constitutional rights shocking i know and then can twitter predict when people get sick and if so what's next whether trends maybe even armageddon here to give us some details on all of it and talk tech to me as r.t.f. producer andrew blake oh yeah all right andrew let's just start before we get into the mega upload stuff specifically and just tell me more about this this leaked report global anti-piracy strategy what does that look like. they're like a big international trade organization all over the world to different trade groups . from america and abroad obviously and they put together a finding every month that report just got leaked online. to get a copy of it and what it says in there is that out of all these websites that are file storage lockers so it's not really file sharing and you take a file you post it somewhere someone else can get it you're not sending it directly to a person out of all of those mega upload the u.s. government you know filed a grand jury indictment against mega upload is barely done anything wrong in the
10:32 pm
eyes of the eye of p.r. which means a huge thing from a couple its case but that doesn't have it in comparison to the other site that they're right if you will to retire because mega upload was actually the largest and was at one point the thirteenth most visited web site on any given day in the entire world so there's no doubt that megaupload is absolutely the biggest one of these of file lockers of any other name i mean who are the names that actually ended up being the larger infringers and it's actually were because we wrote about this yesterday and some of them actually still exist including us based on file sonic w upload file server and for shared those are the top four according to their list but. we got back up a little bit so i'm sorry mega upload the indictment says that they've they've due to the record industry at least five hundred million dollars right however they are in their report what they when they went through a bunch of infringing u r l's like links that would send you to these illegal copyrighted pirated materials or they went through those and find out which ones
10:33 pm
broke the law because under the digital millennium copyright act of one thousand nine hundred eight if you upload a file somewhere if you like the third party that do it you're fine and the person who hosts the file in this case may go upload under the d.m.c.a. they just have to take it down it said easy and they're down the no profits why google still in business that's why you tube still in business if it wasn't for that law you tube would be screwed but when it came to make the upload they found an easy target they found him dot com and he filed this indictment against him so i have p.r. they went over and they looked at a bunch of these file locker sites including mega upload and if you look at all of the big ones mega upload is only responsible for a fraction of these actual infringing your else because when they would get d.m.c.a. complaints and i'll pull over to actually go down to stuff so that i mean in that case that you actually got to speak with kim dot com you know when you're writing this piece for the story how does it feel then about the case that the f.b.i. is betting against the think that they're being unfairly targeted will he's going
10:34 pm
to say that legally you can you are you know that this has all been going on since your narrative of some kind of proof i guess you could say well yeah but it is one thing after another like first it was just a couple of weeks ago that a judge in new zealand actually said that you did on his mansion that doesn't count that's unjust it's illegal you have to throw that out if you can't be charged in new zealand they can't extradite him to the u.s. so one by one the new. what's a good idiom to use here you've got one. you want to say i'm going to try to think of what. the last another great keeps falling out of britain keeps falling out of all sure so the case the f.b.i. has been kind of sucked. begin with and he knew that in the rest the industry knew that you were just recently had steve was came out from apple with apple's cofounders he said that it doesn't add up so now we actually have this report that was this was to come out here that says out of all of these all these sites some of them like excuse me for cheating looking at this graph but if you look at file sonic dot com they're responsible for half of those infringing u r l's in the top
10:35 pm
and they are they still are up and running they're actually files on it is down they are a million and running but it has limited capabilities if you go on there you can't upload and distribute files you can access your old stuff some of them do still exist but file sonic out of all these in a frenzy or else they found they were responsible for half of them and the top four megalopolis number five the top four around eighty percent of these infringing are also the point being when i got was not the worst guy you were actually they were actually doing their dogs really interesting you know and i think that everybody out there she kind of should know that when you when you think about it and we'll see if the f.b.i. is case totally falls apart let's move on to another story. so you know obviously we see a lot of citizen journalism especially with the occupy movement lately we've seen a lot of protests like in and of time and we get to see these things because people record it on their cameras yeah and so the chief of police here and you see she had to just put out a legal memo memorandum when he was in the laughable to the police that the people
10:36 pm
actually allowed to do that yes it actually said that they recognize the first amendment rights under the u.s. constitution which is kind of hilarious because you know it's the it's the first one that really shouldn't have to do your job is to protect people you should pretty much know you know what's happening with the country what it's founded on so we've police had to file a memorandum saying yes we were officers are now aware of the first amendment they know that you can actually you know if you being said or been examined here cable boggles my mind you know that at least on one hand it's a good thing you know that she that she laid it. under no circumstances to tell. they could stop recording people have the right to express criticism of police activity being observed i love that you know when i saw this yesterday the first thing i thought was ok this is great that this made it to the news it actually took off beyond a local level i saw it a couple of places yesterday because i mean i live in d.c. i was handcuffed maybe like three weeks ago for videotaping the police and i was
10:37 pm
like well ok this is great it will get this out there but it really depends on the individual officers how they interpret it how do you interpret the rest of the law thing just happened like yesterday yeah less than twenty four hours after she filed this memo allegedly d.c. metropolitan police officer confiscated a cell phone and i'm sorry a camera and erased all of the week she was also one of the things that they are not allowed to do so they didn't have time to read it and then actually that's a whole other thing that's going to be able actually pathetic that she needs to put out a whole memo out there to remind police officers of the rights that we all have a day just like the media and the bystanders allowed to record whatever it is that they want and can steal their stuff even if you think that there's evidence there without their consent and you know people have to get in here who have to get the supervisor to see borders you know if you're not in this area people don't realize just d.c. borders of virginia and maryland in very peculiar places and as soon as you cross into maryland maryland does actually have bans still in effect for according to
10:38 pm
police officer in one of the three states out there so yeah so it's this is great but people need to actually think about what they're doing still trying to politicize this let's do this well yes the police are rethinking what they're doing all the time let's do this last with really quickly which is that twitter can kind of predict when people are going to get sick and where i mean this is the little bit before you show symptoms a little bit a little bit. ok but obviously you know one of the one cup couple there is a whole gaggle of nerds they took a bunch of geo data from twitter they looked at a bunch of tweets and said ok these are all coming out of new york city they analyzed them for things like people saying oh i feel sick. they went through a couple million of these went through and met them out into manhattan versus they took out like i'm sick of traffic yeah actually they put a little bit of thought into this and they were able to realize that ok if you hang out with these people in the year they're in your circle of friends and they're tweeting if they get sick in there in this part of new york what are the odds that you're going to get sick down the road it's
10:39 pm
a great idea to hold going through data that's post on social media sites it's been allowing everyone to do a lot of things lately we just learned that a couple people just last week took a week's cables and were able to find out where insurgency is happening in afghanistan this is kind of in the same vein maybe a little bit more but i don't know when it has a thing like this where you know they have google flu trends and they see how often people search the flu and where they're searching for and it's interesting but it's kind of creepy but then i guess you know and obviously at the moment there's still a lot of flaws you know i don't i don't tweet about it when i was you know it is sort of people that don't have a computer don't have cell phones or just don't tweet and now at least we're getting somewhere and right there i've been listening for talk and text me my pleasure our guys well it's time for our last break of the evening but stick with us find out why the entire state of pennsylvania wins tonight still time to work and then and really back with anna for another dose of happy hour so find out which supreme court justice tears up angry letters just like a sexually frustrated teenager will be right back.
10:40 pm
more news today. these are the images the world has been seeing from the streets of canada. charlie corporations rule the day. you know how sometimes you see a story and it seems so you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else you hear or see some other part of it and realize everything you thought you knew you don't know i'm tom harvey welcome to the big picture.
10:41 pm
in full started here before going global and now pulling the fire of. law again. choose your place take your stand. needs to. make your statement. smoke towards the i'm going to you my little
10:42 pm
stream loans. hi guys it's time to give out tonight's tool time award and tonight it's going to a state that is just making a total mockery of democracy as we've discussed before the show the election in pennsylvania it's curious to messy actually messy isn't even the right word it is just downright dirty now we told you about the state's voter id law pennsylvania is one of the eleven states to pass a law like that and critics say that it's designed to stop likely democrats from voting and the numbers seem to back up the theory the only type of fraud the id's would stop is voter in person asian and it rarely happens and me where in the u.s. and pennsylvania is no exception the voter suppression is a very real effect in the truth is that it's often democratic voters who are
10:43 pm
lacking i.d.'s and republicans they seem to brush this office of weird conspiracy theory but one pennsylvania republican basically admitted it himself so take it away state representative. this is about making sure that every voting age citizen of the state of pence mean has an opportunity to cast years or older and make sure that it's not being defrauded this is about photo identification voter id which is going to allow governor romney to win the state of pennsylvania done. so if the law is allowed to stand and the swing state of pennsylvania just might swing sharply to the right this november and the rules are currently being challenged in state court an argument started yesterday and regardless of the outcome an appeal is likely but on top of that the justice department is investigating if this law disproportionately affects hispanics and blacks but then yesterday the philadelphia city paper reported the data indicates
10:44 pm
this is the case that it's possible that over one point six million registered voters or twenty percent of the electorate will have state ids by november and a multi-racial philadelphia itself over four hundred and thirty thousand seven people would be without id that is forty three percent of registered voters in the city that's a city that overwhelmingly votes were democrats take the results in philadelphia county in two thousand and ten voters there prefer democrats for governor and the u.s. senate by a margin of almost eight to one so does that seem a little fishy to you because it smells like a big fat run today to me yet republicans still insist that it's all about fraud and it's state i.d.'s are not the only valid tickets needed to vote and fact governor tom corbett pointed this out today and stopping voter fraud is so important to him that he can't even remember how exactly you want to do it. and of course the maybe. we can work with the good there's evil to get
10:45 pm
people to like the it could be military id. who is really very new to hear. why our what an eloquent defense clearly ensuring the integrity of elections really gives this guy up late at night but pennsylvania has election shenanigans do not stop there and democrats themselves aren't exactly squeaky clean either complicit in keeping a very tight grip on the state's political too awfully so the green party in pennsylvania has gathered six thousand signatures to get on the state ballot thus far and they still need about twenty thousand more but republicans and democrats will they only need two thousand signatures to get on the ballot so how does that work they already have a huge advantage in campaign funds the standing over smaller parties like a pair of giraffes on stilts but if that wasn't enough small parties pennsylvania they even even have to sweat bone marrow just to get to the starting line none of it really makes sense to me but maybe that's because i think we should only have a system that maintains the status quo of only republicans and democrats and the
10:46 pm
rules of pennsylvania should not be stacked to fuel their sense of entitlement that sadly they are in the states not alone doing this it's just one of the worst offenders actually in two thousand and six the helsinki committee for human rights called pennsylvania one of the worst places in the world to hold free and fair elections so nice one guys so for providing a textbook example of how lections should not be run we're giving the state of pennsylvania tonight's tool time award. our guys it is time for happy hour and joining me this evening at his fair in co-host of the young turks and r t web producer andrew blake hey guys welcome back . you're matching you both have like this. actually planned this perfectly yeah it looks great on camera but it does look really good on camera i want to keep me out
10:47 pm
of it because of my totally classic you can leave if you want walk off now go away . give me your i'm not enough i don't really have to go really well obviously i won't ok come on really hard if you have already a really want me to leave me it's kind of maybe that's really. all right with. the story so we kind of started talking about this yesterday with the chick fil a story and with boston and now rahm emanuel from chicago is getting into it to take a look. to fully values are not chicago values are not respectful. of our residents our neighbors and our family members. part of this is really spurring a huge debate and i have actually really loved seeing everything that you are writing about of the twitter wars that are going on as to whether you know it's a violation of the freedom of speech for public figures to actually come in and say
10:48 pm
that you know just because the president of your company has a certain political view doesn't mean that we're going to not give you permits right or try to block your business there are people saying that that's completely unfair or excuse me the other way around that that should totally stand and be right what do they say since when does shug chicago care about being with respectable. people who live there and the people that surround them like i lived in chicago there's nothing like fancy about it just watch a drive go oh damn you. i'm sorry i'm tired or you were with already asked to leave ok but the point really doesn't really matter that much if you're chicago you're not going anywhere i mean like what are the odds of the city's going to burn down again and we'll have to rebuild where i support you know saying or living here you have to say about it well i just think that you know the public figures like rahm emanuel should probably stay out of it because i think the media has done a pretty good job at highlighting what chick fil a it's really about the president of the company made
10:49 pm
a complete fool out of himself saying these very anti gay things and you know let the i can't believe i'm making republican argument here but let the free market decide and i think the majority of people have kind of moved away from this like anti-gay notion and and i like that people are saying you know what i'm not going to chick fil a anymore and that's good enough but yes leave it up to the people to stage to do whatever they want but then don't necessarily get at the city involved i'm with i'm with you on that really weird because it's had a lot of people kind of crossing lines and making certain arguments that they normally would be making doing wonders for the progression of american society as a whole because for how many decades have we been trying to get people to start eating healthy and abandon fast food entirely and then. all. the world cares about his church all the country cares about is what the guy that runs it i already know about and i guess i one of my favorite if they do we would be talking about a place out of the game for somebody who was a conservative and said i think this settles it was a picture of anton dodson you've got to say. i don't care about each play whenever
10:50 pm
i want to take away yeah hungry and eat it right and look what's really interesting is after the president of the company released those stupid statements a chick fil a as a whole came out and said nerd no we are a company that wants to cater to everyone regardless of sexual orientation and they realize look this is a franchise and we don't want to screw with all of them you know if mitt romney became president of the like the rest of us coming out and saying oh we know he doesn't like gay people and we know he's not for gay marriage but you know he doesn't represent all this. you know. i let's move on to the next story so my mind's just blown from when you said if mitt romney becomes president i don't rule that one out of why are you. justice scalia is going to be on c.-span and this is actually going to air july twenty ninth and there's just a really great little funny story there of what he likes to do he likes to write
10:51 pm
write letters to take a look at this clip. we get clobbered by the press all the time i can't tell you how many wonderful letters i've written to the washington post church just for my own satisfaction and then ripped open throw thrown away don't you know that's that's the tradition of becoming the judge you do not respond to criticism. he sounds a little bit or even a little bit like you know more into love or crybabies like how do you how many media outlets have criticized this yet really when you make your exact when you make asinine statements and make asinine rulings and yet people are going to criticize you like that's part of being a public figure so his little crybaby crybaby response to these questions i find hilarious and makes me want to criticize him more so yes i think. when you were one of panel of only people i knew you'd think about if you would make a supreme you know you know law of the land that i think it's pretty fair game that you have what you do is going to be up for critique i don't want to hear about it i
10:52 pm
like finding out about the tradition of the common law judge that's a little late for generations now like the nine justices just have to look after the done with it's always been the washington post you know or was it as that a certain time a different paper week after lee roe versus wade they all went back home and we just like people don't like us anymore they like wrote letters they just threw it out is that really what this country is about you and i think it's a ritual they all do it together maybe a bonding moment for the supreme court justice supreme court should hang out with rahm emanuel because clearly they're all about you know what staying in the past and tradition and where we are we've got to be able to find these little ripped up pieces of paper to see the letters i would love to read one of those letters but it won't last where it's so let's move on to probably my favorite video of the entire day this one is just just so good it's was it chris crocker was that his name to leave britney alone yeah yeah shame it that i know that yes. which i pretended
10:53 pm
to be one time we are a little compilation of our favorite youtube clips. but this one is an emotional twilight fan for those of you who don't know kristen stewart was caught cheating on robert pattinson because there are pictures of her that surfaced as weekly where she was making out with the director of the snow white movie who also by the way is married and his wife is also in the movie what the hell talking about. this is what this is all about the celebrity gossip of the day but some of us were. there are some really upset fans out there but no one more than the girls take a look. she would. just become the most of those who we. are but i know by the way is over four
10:54 pm
minutes long and you have to watch the whole thing early as the last few minutes are there they're all worth it because she's like angry at people for caring for the press and she's like leave them alone it's their life but then she goes on a whole rant is like i can't believe you did it to rob and so she has her own little emotional schizo phrenic rollercoaster that was it was terrifyingly realistic c.g.i. work i've ever seen in my life because i feel horrible i don't know how to feel about her because part of me feels shouldn't it all just part of me feels like she has some sort of you know little imbalance you know you don't want to make fun of her but at the same time like there are people out there who genuinely care about what's going on in the celebrities like they live vicariously through these celebrities it's ridiculous i mean i just want to give her a hug and tell her it's going to be ok ok case to and by the way how does she is she like fifteen years old she should be dating around the no good time how old is that my card actually i don't think that i have unfortunately as
10:55 pm
a parent you did all day was follow up on the celebrity gossip no i don't want to show to prepare for andrew but i clearly there's no you know i research every story and this one required research as well ok had to do all right. what do they call them what is what are they called the couple. i know it's but it just i think your grandchildren you know it kind of thing and so they have their own little name as well where they're like us into one but people are really upset about this art well understand of mexico. take a look at this crazy weird thing that showed up. washed up in brooklyn. the parks and rec said it's a pig from a family cookout except look that was don't have side fingers right pigs don't have long claws that can be used to grab kids out of cradles in the scary. pig it's very reminiscent of the long talk to your favorite. last year and.

there's nothing better than seeing it actually news bears as monster. it was knew was going to be what any do you know is going to happen it was bound to happen know there are thirty years of real life lots of ridiculous you guys watch newsroom at all and h.b.o. i have not been up to date on news right now so the last episode featured one of the segment producers arguing that big foot does indeed exist and it's actually an argument that jank makes on the young turks show on a regular basis and he's like no no we haven't discovered every species on the planet so big foot might exist and who knows maybe the montauk monster does exist maybe you know maybe this is amazing to you very real thing to write all the chemicals that are pumping into the air into the ocean what you know who knows what's going to come out ok guys i got to wrap it up but if you don't know i'm sorry because you know i am right that is it for tonight's show thanks for tuning in and make you come back tomorrow representative dennis kucinich is going to be
